Native to Europe and Asia, it is also known as a sweetroot, referencing its Latin name and noteworthy alkaloid glycyrrhizin, which is 50 times sweeter than sugar.
Tea: Add 1 tsp chopped root or a 1-inch slice per cup boiling water. Simmer or steep 10-20 min. Strain. Chew a piece as a breath freshener.
Specific cautions: Use in moderation. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding. Contradicted for hypertension, liver disorders, edema, severe kidney insufficiency, low blood potassium, or heart disease.
